Workshop Lead: Diana Mangaser
In conjunction with Delcy Morelos: El abrazo, Dia presented Soil Sessions, an iterative series of interdisciplinary activations, poetic responses to, discursive reflections on, and embodied engagements with earth as subject and material in Morelos’s work.
Drawing on her own relationship to soil as an architect and artist, Diana Mangaser identifies soil as a creative and generative material that shapes our surroundings. For Soil Compositions, Mangaser lead a material-focused workshop in which participants created their own unique soil compositions by selecting from an array of aggregates.
As a primer for developing a deeper understanding of soil, the workshop imagined each material contributing its specific character to a personal soil structure reflecting the maker’s identity in some way. Mangaser poses questions for us to consider: What is soil? What is our relationship to soil and in what ways does it reflect on how we build our contemporary life?

By invitation from Alexis Lowry to collaborate on an exhibition of Posenenske’s work at the Bauhaus, Diana Mangaser designed models &#38;amp; a workshop inviting public to design sculptures using paper board series DW models at 1:20 scale. These crowd sourced designs then inform and shape the layout and reconfiguration of the full scale elements three times over the course of the exhibition.

1463sf live/work studio with 777sf outdoor walled garden+ 731sf 1bed/ba with 732sf outdoor terraceBefore the building was acquired from Newburgh Community Land Bank, this historic property was once a horse surgery and at one point the city dog pound, after which it stood vacant for decades. In collaboration with our client, a local artist, the building’s terraced shell was transformed into two levels of artist live/work spaces leveraging historic tax credits and affordable housing grants. 
Historic elements, like the brick facade, window openings, and original metal skylights manufactured in 1800s by Philip Kempler Co. Newburgh, have been restored and continue to let natural light into the newly renovated interiors. Both the ground floor space and second floor apartment open to generous outdoor terraces enclosed by masonry walls creating private oases in the midst of the urban environment.

In conjunction with the exhibition Charlotte Posenenske, Dia Art Foundation presented Posenenske Sessions II—a winter workshop session in-person at Dia:Beacon and online via zoom. In keeping with the participatory and democratic process that Posenenske envisioned for her work, workshop participants were invited to collaborate in designing the installation.

19’ x 19’ interlocking wood structure and deck set in volcanic gravel ringDesigned for Alva Mooses’ as part of her project, Se entra bailando / You enter dancing, at Socrates Sculpture Park, this dance platform was inspired by the Purépecha ‘troje’—vernacular architecture decimated by the eruption of Paricutín volcano in Michoacán, México in 1943. &#38;nbsp;The eruption forced the Purépecha residents of San Juan Parangaricutiro to relocate and left only fragments of the local church visible. The Dance Platform utilized an interlocking wood structural grid to support the wooden deck and provide a hollowness for reverberation of the dancer’s steps, an integral part of the performance. The modular design allowed for ease of construction, transportation, and installation of the wooden elements on site. The wood elements were stabilized and surrounded by a bed of of decomposed black asphalt emulating the volcanic eruption.

箱 寿 司 HAKO-SUSHIat 1.5 ROOMSBrooklyn, NY2017
8”x 14.5” Hako Sushi 	箱 寿 司 HAKO-SUSHI or Oshizushihako 押し寿司箱, literally “pressed sushi box” are rectangular molds filled with rice, fish, vegetables, and other condiments to prepare pressed sushi (oshizushi 押し寿司 or hako-sushi 箱寿司 ), a method perfected in Osaka and Japan’s Kansai region in the early 18th century. Using a traditional hako, intended to serve 1-2 people as a model to construct a sushi box press at three times the scale, Y S D M created a series of seasonally inspired large pressed sushi to serve 18-20 people. Invited by Colleen Tuite, curator of 1.5 Rooms, Y S D M prepared this Dinner as an Act of Construction with a group of friends, architects, and artists who partook in the making, sharing, and eating of large-format hako-sushi.

ARTIST IN VACANCY
Newburgh Community Land Bank Newburgh, NY2017-2024
Director/Curator: Diana MangaserArtist-In-Vacancy is a creative initiative conceived and directed by Diana Mangaser with Newburgh Community Land Bank to address vacancy &#38;amp; abandonment in Newburgh by re-imagining vacant sites as places for community engagement, artistic production, aesthetic &#38;amp; cultural research, and renewed inhabitation. By opening NCLB properties as temporary platforms for creative interventions, Artist-In-Vacancy looks to transform liabilities into sites for engagement: safe, accessible spaces which draw the public experience inside the vacancy and bring life back to marginalized spaces of underserved neighborhoods in the city. Diana Mangaser has directed Artist In Vacancy since 2017 piloting &#38;amp; developing the program with inaugural artists, Laura Genes and Colleen Tuite &#38;amp; Ian Quate (formerly known as GRNASFCK). The program has received recognition from the Atlantic’s City Lab - “Lifting a Small Town Through a Land Bank Arts Program”, Center for Community Progress’ Case Study on Creative Placemaking on Vacant Properties: Lessons Learned from Four Cities, and Art Place America’s National Summit on Creative Placemaking. Artist-In-Vacancy is supported with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by Arts Mid Hudson.
